To everyone in the extended Aspens family,

I wanted to reach out to you because, as you may already know, this is Mental Health Awareness Week. The theme of this year’s MHA week is kindness, which couldn't feel more apt given what we're all going through right now.

As we continue to grapple with the effect of COVID-19, one thing has become crystal clear: this is not a sprint, it's not even a marathon. As a keen runner myself, I see the times we're living through now as one of toughest challenges known to man. It's probably akin to the Marathon de Sables

A pretty tall order when, speaking personally, although I try to get myself out for a walk or a run each day, sometimes I find it a struggle even to do that! Though when I do make it out and spend a precious half hour in the fresh air and sunshine, I know the impact it has on my mood benefits everyone around me - including my family and my wonderful team.

Be kind

At Aspens we made a vow, from day one of this horrific pandemic, that we wanted all our people to be kind to themselves. 2020 has been a really hard time for every one of us and I don't know anybody who hasn't had to step outside their comfort zone again and again, whether it be at work or at home.

People are doing things they wouldn't normally do, out of sheer necessity, and the majority of people are working a good number of extra hours at the moment, particularly in our care industry.

#takecareofyou

We hope you've found our posts positive and uplifting in these sad times and I just wanted to post today to encourage our beloved Aspens family to #takecareofyou

Find time for yourself. Get your sleep. Reach out to others when you need support.

If you're finding your mental wellbeing a struggle and don't feel you can speak to those around you about it, there are some excellent organisations you can speak to in complete anonymity. Speak to your GP for a recommendation, or if you need to, call the Samaritans on 116 123. If you don't want to speak on the phone, you can text Crisis on 85258.

You deserve it

So, my message is a simple one as we start this week’s Mental Health Awareness Week -

Be kind to yourself. YOU DESERVE IT. We'll run this long race together.

Take care, stay safe & be kind,
