Aspens Welcomes Paralympic Champion Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE as New Patron We are incredibly proud to announce that Paralympic gold medallist Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE has joined Aspens as our new patron. Jessica-Jane joins our existing patron, Camellia Taylor, award-winning garden designer, in supporting Aspens’ mission to create an inclusive society for all. Jessica-Jane is one of Britain’s most inspiring athletes. Competing in the S14 category for swimmers with an intellectual disability, she made history at the London 2012 Paralympic Games when, just days after turning 16, she won gold in the 200m freestyle, setting a new Paralympic record and becoming the only British S14 gold medallist at the time. Jessica-Jane, who is on the autism spectrum, has become a passionate advocate for inclusion and invisible disabilities. Since her ground-breaking success in 2012, she has gone on to achieve over 80 British Swimming records, as well as World and European records, and has brought home multiple medals from international competitions. In 2022, she added a Commonwealth Games silver medal to her collection and was named a Virtus Hall of Fame winner. She received an MBE in 2013 for services to swimming. Jessica-Jane first connected with Aspens earlier this year when she spoke at our Conference, sharing her story with authenticity, warmth and passion. Her personal journey resonates with so many of the people we support. Jessica-Jane said: “I’m really looking forward to working with Aspens, as their mission feels very personal to me. I hope that by sharing my own experiences, thoughts and ideas, I can help promote greater inclusion and empowerment for the individuals Aspens supports.” Robert Shanahan, Aspens CEO, shared: “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Jessica-Jane as a patron. Her lived experience resonates deeply with the people we support, and the inspiration she brings is truly invaluable. Her achievements and public profile will help us shine a spotlight on the importance of inclusion and strengthen our vision for a society where autistic individuals and those with learning disabilities can thrive.” Welcome, Jessica-Jane!
