  • Our patron Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE

Our patron Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE

We are honoured to welcome Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE, Paralympic champion and passionate advocate for inclusion, as a patron of Aspens.

Jessica-Jane is one of Great Britain’s most inspiring athletes. Competing in the S14 classification for swimmers with an intellectual disability, she made history at just 16 years old by winning gold at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, setting a new Paralympic record in the 200m freestyle. She went on to become the first and only British athlete to win a gold medal in her category at the time.

Since then, Jessica-Jane has continued to achieve outstanding success on the national and international stage. With over 80 British Swimming records, multiple World and European medals, and a Commonwealth Games silver medal, she is widely recognised not only for her athletic accomplishments but also for her tireless work in promoting awareness around autism and unseen disabilities.

Jessica-Jane was awarded an MBE in 2013 for services to swimming and is a vocal advocate for inclusion and empowerment for people with learning disabilities and neurodivergent conditions.

A Personal Connection to Our Work

Jessica-Jane’s own experiences as an autistic person and athlete bring a unique and powerful perspective to her role with Aspens.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Aspens, as their mission feels very personal to me. I hope that by sharing my own experiences, thoughts and ideas, I can help promote greater inclusion and empowerment for the individuals Aspens supports.”

– Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE

Jessica-Jane first became involved with Aspens in early 2025, speaking at our annual Conference, where she inspired attendees with her story of determination, resilience, and ambition.

Working Together for an Inclusive Society

As patron, Jessica-Jane joins Camellia Taylor, the award-winning garden designer and long-time supporter, in championing our work and helping raise awareness of our mission to create a world where every autistic person and individual with a learning disability can thrive and live life to the full.

“Jessica-Jane’s lived experience resonates deeply with the people we support, and the inspiration she brings is truly invaluable. Her achievements and public profile will help shine a spotlight on the importance of inclusion and equality.”

– Robert Shanahan, CEO, Aspens

We’re excited to have Jessica-Jane on board as we continue to grow our services, expand awareness, and empower individuals across the South-East and beyond.
